During the first two observation runs, the LIGO and VIRGO gravitational wave observatories detected 6 binary black hole collisions and the first binary neutron star collision, with deeper analysis of the data still on going. This shattered a long-opaque window, busting a new field of astronomy wide open, resulting in ground-breaking information about the never-before-observed universe. So — what’s next? After briefly reviewing the exciting astrophysical results to-date, let’s talk about the improvements that have been made to the detector in the year since the last observing run, prospects for improved sensitivity, and our plans for more upgrades to reach the aLIGO target sensitivity and beyond.
