LIGO Document G1801078-v2
- 100 years ago, Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves. These ripples in the space-time geometry propagate at the speed of light and are witness to some of the most energetic events in the Universe. Following a major upgrade, the two detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) completed their first two observation runs. The first run awarded us with the detection of the first gravitational wave signatures from merging black hole binary systems. The most recent detection of a binary neutron star collision—together with an associated electromagnetic counterpart—heralds the beginning of multi messenger astronomy.
