LIGO Document G1602081-v2
- LIGO’s transformational discovery of gravitational waves, propagating distortions in the fabric of space and time, validates Einstein’s general relativity theory in the extremely strong-field régime and gives us a radically new way of observing the universe.
In this talk we will explore the origins of gravitational waves and the compact stellar objects that can generate them, how LIGO managed to detect these extremely tiny signals, and the implications of their discovery for astronomy and astrophysics.
- Deleted a few pages and added a discussion of the post-Newtonian expression for the magnitude of gravitational waves.
