Advanced LIGO's ability to detect apparent violations of the cosmic censorship conjecture and the no-hair theorem through CBC detections

In anticipation of the new era of gravitational wave detectors, it is especially important to develop methods for gaining information about astrophysical systems from gravitational wave signals. We have been working on developing a method for testing the cosmic censorship conjecture and the no-hair theorem using the inspiral portion of the compact binary coalescence gravitational waveform. The cosmic censorship conjecture implies a limit on the spin to mass squared ratio of a black hole. The no-hair theorem implies that a black hole should not be tidally deformed. The method we are developing will allow us to predict advanced LIGO%u2019s ability to detect violations of the cosmic censorship conjecture and the no-hair theorem in the Kerr geometry. We use parameter estimation techniques to calculate the measurability of the spin, mass, and tidal parameters appearing in the gravitational waveform, and then determine if the measurability of these parameters will allow for the detection of a violation of either cosmic censorship or the no-hair theorem. We have investigated the effect of limiting the parameter space to only physically allowed values of the symmetric mass ratio, and we have investigated the effect of using improved post-Newtonian models for the CBC inspiral waveform.
